The editing

The scenes are very choppy, jumping one to the next, mid-score and all.

Did this happen somewhere along the lines of vhs/DVD, or was the final cut of the movie always like this?

I really notice it in the scene where David encounters the vampiric Carolyn out by the old pool. When he realizes she's a ghost or some kind of specter, he pulls back and says, "you're dead!" and then it very abruptly cuts to the dining room of Collinwood. It seems like something continued with Carolyn. Maybe she lunges at him or something, but I don't know why that would've been cut.
