I do believe the last story is the best-and most satisfying especially as it ties the whole thing together;

Really? I thought the scariest part is when Charles saw Dominic standing at the top of the stairs.

The detective creeping through the house at night was very scary and atmospheric, but the vampires were a cheesy letdown.

Indeed. They were comical, not scary in the slightest bit, unless you are 5 years-old.
