Don't Copy Off Turner Classic Movies, Wait for the Disk

If you enjoy "The Hawaiians" and want a copy of this on DVD, I would usually suggest you buy a DVD recorder and copy it off Turner Classic Movies. Unfortunately, the bluenoses who now run our country have apparently put their pressure on Turner Classic Movies and the one piece of necessary nudity I can easily defend has be cut. Charleton Heston's first introduction to his future Japanese mistress takes place in a public bath. He sees her topless, lush body close to him. The viewer immediately understands Heston's attraction. Without this shot, the scene is weak and a fairly importent subplot is reduced in impact.

Hopefully, any prerecorded disk of this film will keep this scene intact.

There is an import DVD avaliable on Ebay, but for use on a PAL DVD player (which I have).. There are 2 reasons I have not purchased theDVD. It is "Full Screen" and it lists at 129 minutes while IMDB lists the film at 134 minutes. Sounds like it is cut as well.

I have been informed that the packagaing details are wrong and this Spanish produced DVD is in fact in Wide Screen (2.35 to 1 Panavision). Being transferred to the PAL system used for European and Australian TVs, there is a slight speed-up which always causes running times to be a few minutes shorter than the official running time. It does not necessarily mean there is anything missing and the slight tempo change is generally un-noticeable. Cheers, Mike

You can do what I did, and that is you can re-encode the PAL to NTSF by using Nero. I had found a tutorial on this somewhere, and did this to a copy of a movie I could only find in PAL, It was "What Became of the Broken Hearted". It came out quite well.

Thanks! As I am in Australia, PAL is fine as it is our TV system here. Most TVs here are now multi-system and play everything. Thanks for the tip as it may help some Stateside collectors. Cheers, Mike

You can all rag on TCM all you want, but I never would have discovered this gem if it hadn't been playing on TCM, albeit at three thirty in the morning! A small attempt at diverting insomnia turned into a cinematic experience. I found this to be a very good film, and am stumped as to why it's been so overlooked by all. After seeing it on TCM, I will definitely be on the lookout for a good DVD version, hopefully in BluRay someday.

You cant blame TCM. They recently showed Equus with considerable male and female full frontal nudity. The studio likely cut it, if it was cut, like they did with the original Planet of the Apes.

reply

TCM also showed the uncut version of "Age of Consent", so it is not them......

Last night on their TCM Underground series they showed "Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush" from 1967 and it didn't have any of the sex or nudity excluded. Is it possible that they're pressured to censor certain material during specific times of day? "The Hawaiians is starting now, I'll be curious to see if it's edited, it's 9am here.

The movie "Hawaii" was released at 189 minutes but on TCM it only runs 164 minutes. The studio must cut them. I found an old VHS copy of Hawaii at 189 minutes. Lots more Bette Midler on cuts.

reply

Now watching it on TCM and it has all the nudity in it. No cuts. TCM is not a prude station.

reply

Yup, the topless public bath scene was fully intact on the TCM airing Sep 13. And I agree it is important to the plot. : )

I "taped" (if that's what you can call a digital recording on the computer) when it played on TCM Saturday. Really happy to come on here and see that it hasn't been cut. I missed most of it the first time I saw it was on a couple weeks ago. Will watch it when I get some time in the next week or so.

The previous comments about it being cut by the distributor (or whomever, but not TCM) seems to be the most probably reason for the missing minutes.

If anyone's still looking, I found a website that is selling the DVD version of the movie for only $9.99: http://www.dvdsclassic.com/hawaiians-dvd.html.

You can just say "recorded". That applies to any medium past, present, or future.

I also saw it on TCM HD, full japanese boobies intact. I felt the same attraction as Heston's character!

It is available in all it's glory on Netflix instant.
