Anybody else have a similar high school experience?

Hey,

I was just wondering if anybody else had a similar experience in high school? I really like the fact that this movie wanted to show the forgotten side of integrating the school systems. You hear a lot about the small groups of black students who were bussed into white schools in the deep south. Most people don't realize that in many urban centers, there was also an effort to bus white students into otherwise non-white schools.

I was one of these students, albeit much later than this film (it was the 80's for me). Imagine my trepidation as they dropped me off the first day...my bangs long and bleached blond (I said it was the 80's!), my slight build and nonagressive nature, completely ignorant of the customs of this new environment.

I did get picked on...a lot. The first few months were awful, but eventually I figured out how everything worked, who was friendly, who to avoid, etc. In the end, I wouldn't trade my high school experience for anything. It gave me a unique opportunity to see the world from a different angle. I also made some good friends who I still talk to today.

So, it really was interesting to see a movie made from this point of view, even if it did lack certain merits.

I went to high school between 2000-2004, so my experience was different. I went to a predominantly black school and I can honestly say that the whites kids were not picked on or harassed like they may have been during that time. Yes there were a lot of 'Eninem' type of white guys that were really accepted, but even the regular ones were mostly left alone. If anything the black kids that came across as nerdy or gay students were picked on the most. I am just speaking on my school, so I can't speak for others. I have spoken to black and white adults that had to go to schools where they were the clear minority back then. Both sides had horror stories to tell and it was disheartening to hear. I know that racism is still alive and well even into today's age, but I am glad that times are better than they used to be with the younger generation.

An article on how is teaching black students. It seems to me that the problems come not from being poor but the kind of culture they promote.

Another article.

Shortly before I started at my high school, the students and teachers at that time, (all white) had protested and picketed to get a new building and equipment. And they had succeeded. The building was brand new and ultramodern. Well, blacks immediately complained that it “wasn’t fair” that whites got to go to such a nice new school. They demanded that the school boundaries be changed so that more blacks could go to the school; otherwise, they’d riot. Each year, the boundaries were expanded so that more and more blacks could attend the fancy new school building— the one that white students and teachers had picketed and protested and worked to obtain.

By my senior year, the school was about 50% black. Whites were jumped and beaten just for walking down the hall. White girls were not allowed to use the restrooms or try out for cheeleader, or they’d be beaten. Black kids stole from whites and demanded whites hand over their possessions. Blacks pushed whites’ food trays to the floor in the cafeteria, then demanded the whites cleam up the mess. The principal and teachers sided with the blacks out of fear. The blacks were given everything they demanded, while whites were told to shut up, give in, and not antagonize them. Blacks loved setting off the fire alarms, forcing everybody to evacuate and go outside in the freezing Chicago weather. Blacks rioted on a regular basis. All the good teachers got disgusted and ended up leaving. Normal teenage activities like proms, clubs and dances were simply not possible at my school. Learning was not possible. It was all about making it through the day alive, and suffering through the four years just so you wouldn’t have the stigma of being a “high school dropout.”

Rioting almost everyday? Come on you sound like a bigot. The other poster was closer to the truth. You really need to shut up because all you are doing is promoting a stereotype that only a racist would believe is true. Everyone else knows you are full of a lot of poop.

Ecthelion2005, you paint a very accurate account of what happened here in Southern California when busing began in 1970. I grew up in Southern California and when busing started and most of the white and Asian (they were a small minority here in the 1970s) were forced to transfer out and into private schools which they still attend today. In Pasadena CA, (the SoCal city has more high performing private schools than any other city it's size) the public schools had a majority of white students and were generally well performing schools as of the the late 1960s. By the early 1970s w/busing in place, the public schools lost most of the white students (and the parental involvement in the schools) and the schools began a long slide from which they never recovered.

Today some white and Asian parents will keep their children in public schools up until middle school and then transfer them to private schools. The public schools in L.A. today are 90% Latino and black and are considered 'drop-out factories' w/50-60% drop-out rates and very low test scores for the students who manage to stay in school. It's a very sad situation that the massive investment of taxpayer money cannot correct. The majority of kids and parents simply don't care.

reply

Oh boy let me get this straight Asians and whites were forced to transfer to private schools. Why? What is this another online KKK meeting. WIth years of unequal education in the schools you all have some nerve by insinuating something was wrong with busing. That is the reason people were bused. Black schools were underfunded and even though back in the 50's with the Brown vs Education ruling it was proved there was a separate and unequal education you white folks resisted integrating the schools. When you were forced because of your own actions you got some nerve to complain about the quality of the education and the students. Gee. Oh and btw do not even try to equate white students with Asians because they do not think too highly of you and also you are the first people claiming they are taking the best spots in colleges. SO you can't have it both ways You can't use them to advance your agenda and then scorn them because they are clearly better students then white students.

In NY Asians in the city have no problem going to school with black or latino people it is white folks that give them and everybody else a hard time when they go to your schools. Most cases white folks are so scared to eal with anybody who is not them they runaway and sell their houses. But it has been shown, for example Central High School in Little Rock, if the white people were not so cowardly and stayed in the schools they do very well.

You all got some nerve. You white folks had to be forced by the Supreme Court to let black little children go to your schools. And states still resisted until they had to reminded to integrate in all deliberate speed. History has shown little black children having the National Guard protecting them because white people were tying to kill them simply because they were trying to go to a all white school. Governors of states standing on school steps defying orders to integrate. I know people who buses were almost turned over by white parents when they were in grade school in Mississippi. I myself have seen black kids being spit and yelled at and having rocks thrown at them by white parents in Boston. You tell me when the last time the National Guard had to be called in or groups of black parents threatened the life of little white kids when they were bused into a white neighborhood. You all to be ashamed of yourselves. So it is time for the online KKK meeting to end. Meeting adjourned!

Lol Marbleann, sorry to burst your buble but i am latino not even an american. Your constant mention of "you white people" show me how much hate you have against whites and how desperate are you to blame them for all the problems of blacks.
You tell me to "shut up"... well , thats kind of intolerant if you cant accept other people opinions and experiences. Many latinos outperforms blacks at schools and their parents come from another culture and dont even speak english so they start at disadvantage.
I think the explanation is that blacks have adopted a thuggish culture as a role model and study and hard work is denigrated as "acting white". No amount of money will improve black results at school unless they change that ghetto attitude.
Another article about this that explains this better than me.

Kathleen Parker, Salt Lake Tribune, May 15, 2007

In a new twist in American race relations, a federal court has ruled that a white teacher in a predominantly African-American school was subjected to a racially hostile workplace.

The case concerned Elizabeth Kandrac, who was routinely verbally abused by black students at Brentwood Middle School in North Charleston. Their slurs make shock jock Don Imus look like a church deacon.

Nevertheless, despite frequent complaints, school officials did nothing to intervene on Kandrac’s behalf, arguing that the racially charged profanity was simply part of the students’ culture. If Kandrac couldn’t handle cursing, school officials told her, she was in the wrong school.

Kandrac finally filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and subsequently brought a lawsuit against the Charleston County School District, the school’s principal and an associate superintendent. Last fall, jurors found that the school was a racially hostile environment to teach in and that the school district retaliated against Kandrac for complaining about it.

Although Kandrac clearly suffered—she was suspended from her job shortly after a story about her EEOC complaint appeared in the local newspaper, and her contract was not renewed—her case didn’t meet evidentiary requirements for damages. The judge said a new trial would have to determine damages, but the school district and Kandrac settled for $200,000

The key legal question was whether a school could be held responsible for students’ behavior. In this case, the black children of Brentwood had been given a pass for their behavior because vulgar language was considered normal for their culture.

Defense attorney Alice Paylor told jurors that the kids heard this same language at home and there was “no magic pill” to make them behave. Paylor is probably right about that, though a magic paddle might have worked wonders

Let’s be clear: What these children called this teacher is beyond reprehensible and could be only be construed as hostile and threatening. Here’s a sample: white b—, white m—- f—-, white c—, white a—-, white ho.

Kandrac’s attorney, Larry Kobrovsky, argued that the repeated use of “white” made these slurs racist in nature. But school officials insisted that because black students were equally abusive to other blacks, the language wasn’t inherently racist.

Here’s what we know without question: If majority white students had used similar language toward black students and teachers, the case would have been plastered on the front page of The New York Times until heads rolled.

A black Kandrac would have a million-dollar book deal, a movie contract and hundreds of interviews to juggle. Her oppressors and those who passively facilitated her abuse would have been pilloried by the media—their faces all over the evening news—while the reverends Al and Jesse organized protests.

But a white Kandrac—who faced a daily barrage of insults, who had books and desks thrown at her and her bicycle tires punctured—was treated like an incompetent wimp. She was just a lousy teacher out for money, the defense attorney said.

Latino is not race, it is a ethnicity. Latinos for the most part particularly Mexicans and South Americans consider themselves white. The sad thing is that white Americans hate you as much as they hate other minorities but you have convinced yourselves to hate black people people who you should be close to. White Americans think you all should go back to Mexico because you are all illegal. Even if you have been here longer then they have. Now on the east coast black and Latinos get along. I am married to a Dominican. But over on the west coast and here in parts of Texas they suffer from a large amount of confusion. Trying to pass as white non Latino. They have been so pounced on by white Americans so much you have a lot of self hatred. Evidenced by your post. The Latinos hate the black people hence the gangs on the west coast. You have taken the the role of your oppressers. On the East coast there is no such problems. Black people support and even elect lationo politicians and visa versa.

Now to touch on the other thing I was stating. I am sure there are problems with white kids or teachers in black schools. Of course but nothing compared to what happens and what happened to black children. White jewish teachers traditionally had taught in inner city schools in NYC with little problems. My mother taught in a all black school and the white teachers had little problems. Even black teachers have problems in black schools like white teachers have gotten beat up in white schools.

Howard Stern lies when he claims he got beat up, he lived right down the block from me and he had no problems. But he knows saying things like that appeals to his audience. So stop trying to act like you are a victim because if you are indeed a Latino you would know how much the white Americans hate you to the point that a lot of you have allowed your own heritage fade away. They want to run you not just out of the classroom they want to run you out of the country! Hence you would know exactly what I am talking about. So i have to assume you are passing as a white non Latino or you are kissing a lot of butt, the Tio Tom of Latinos or you are lying.

If you are really married to a dominican woman you would understand this.
" No hay nadie mas ciego que el que no quiere ver"

I think your personal experiences are different from most people, i dont hink you are lying about that as you think the rest of the people are doing but we are speaking of the common attitude and results of black students. The truth is they are the worst students in terms of behaviour and academic results, even worst that vietnamese , hispanic or nigerians that have just arrived there.
If you ask young blacks what they want to be when they are adults they tell you they want to be rap stars or NBA players . It looks to me that jobs like doctors, writers, cientifics, lawyers are viewed as " white jobs". With that kind of expectations in life its no wonder they fail so bad at school. Role models are thugs.

As latino-hispanics sorry to say but they dislike blacks more than your average "anglo-american" . We are catholic, have hispanic culture and language and have strong family ties. Little in common with the afro-american culture. No wonders that the average mexican inmigrant dont like blacks.

@Ecthelion

If you managed to catch Henry Louis Gates' BLACK IN LATIN AMERICA last week on PBS, it's explained why Dominicans were ingrained into thinking that they were better than their Haitian cousins, which I've always found strange (and stupid as hell, since they ARE black)since they ALL came there on the same damn slave ships. And, BTW, ALL black students do NOT want to be rappers and NBA stars---the difference between blacks & Hispanics/Asians is that you didn't have nearly 400 years of living in a white society that constantly telling you that you were dumb, stupid, ignorant and less than human, deprived you of any and ALL human rights, making you hate & depise damn near EVERYTHING about yourself (your lips, hair, way of speaking) because you weren't white and enslaved you for nearly 300 years on top of that.

I grew up in a working-class black community where education WAS valued, and I grew up in a home where me & my siblings were taught that education was a priority--and no we weren't exceptions to the rules or anything like that--we were the norm, thank you very much (and, yeah, I'm black). Honestly, I am so sick & tired of people like you generalizing about black people as if ALL of us are just lazy & ignorant,as if none of us want to be anything---that is just so much racist bulls***. How the hell would YOU know,if you're never even visited a black person's home? Do you even KNOW any black people, for that matter? When you go to poor inner city schools that are underfunded in areas where there are NO jobs because all the factories have closed down & moved away, and where teachers have to work with little to no resources due to lack of support & basic school supplies, as well as being underpaid, and suburban schools in rich white school district getting more preference in funding, as well as the fact that this has been going on in this country for WELL over a hundred some years--plus black children's education not being valued to begin with by white society--and THAT'S what contributed to the problems you see in today's inner city schools---it's more complicated than black students being "the worst" as you put it. That does NOT excuse black kids today from doing well in school at all---and a lot of them here in Detroit do,despite the odds---I'm just pointing out the historical reason why these problem for them exist in the first place--which continue to this day.

Another things---Latinos/Asians don't have a claim AT ALL on having a culture and family ties--so do black folks-I know mine does---(plus your cultures have gangs too, just like anybody's else) and funny how you don't mention black Latinos and how they are seen as black by this society,period---BTW, Southwest Detroit is largely Latino--mostly Mexican,I believe---they're the minority here among us black folks, but they keep coming here, so apparently they don't have much of a problem with that, and they like their corner of this town. You also conveniently left out how Latinos themselves were discriminated against and basically treated like black people for the longest time, and white people saw then as nothing but cheap labor to use (like they do illegal immigrants today)for their own ends. And keep in mind, that if you live in Arizona, thanks to the new racist immigration law there, you can get stopped by the cops there at every roadblock if you even look remotely Latino to them, they can demand to see your passport/license/birth certificate. Basically if you don't have any of these, you can be hauled off to be deported on the spot. If you forgot to bring one of these with you, even if you are actually American, tough s***---you're automatically getting the boot back across the border. So stop with the "we're so much better than black people because we're not black and we kiss white folks' a$$es because they're so much more superior than everybody else on earth" bulls***. Hell, black people and Latinos (not the white ones) have WAY more in common due to a shared history of discrimination, being colonized/taught to hate ourselves/by white folks throughout this country's history. You've just bought into the white supremacist BS that says to be accepted as a true American, you must hate/disrespect black folks and treat them like s***, because that's how it's ALWAYS been done here in the U.S. Hate---it's as American as apple pie.

My problem with HALLS OF ANGER is that it only tells the story of integrating schools from the white perspective---when like marbleann said, it was historically primarily black children who bore the brunt of integration by being threatened, hit & spat on,beat up, basically everything she said. So, yeah, it's pretty damn biased because it dosen't tell the whole story, or even explain why the schools had to be integrated in the first place. I have to admit, I haven't seen the whole movie yet, but that's all I've gotten from it so far. I suggest you watch the 2nd part of BLACK IN LATIN AMERICA--it's about being black in Cuba.

"Latino is not race, it is a ethnicity. Latinos for the most part particularly Mexicans and South Americans consider themselves white."

George Lopez is so white I thought I was watching Conan.

Get real. They don't consider themselves white. They consider themselves Latino or Hispanic or some even Indian. You can say that's not a race but finding a Hispanic that goes oh yeah I'm a white guy or Caucasian would be an interesting search. Anyone you find that concedes the point will likely be humoring you to get away from your hate.

Black racist are funny. They claim everyone not black is white. Lineswoman that one of the Williams sister threatened is a good example. Internet and TV was a buzz with how it was just some scared silly white girl and that white girl is racist. Black racist and leftist must have bad TVs since she was 100% Korean on mine and later reported as such but the lied and continued with the spiteful scared white girl fantasy.

Steve McNair's killer was another good one. Knew she wasn't white but every black racist and leftist said white as snow. Didn't look white to me. Turns out to be Iranian at which point these people double down and said "Yeah, Iranian, Evil White people!" Delusion can be fun.

just because someone else doesn't have the same experiences that you, that does not make them racist.

in reading their comments, there is nothing there to make one assume that the commenter is recist.

in reading YOUR comments, the way YOU are quick to judge, criticize, and condemn others... a generous assessment of you would be that you are an internet troll or flamer. the evidence for that is in each of your posts.

Yeah,yeah---what bulls*** white supremacist website did you pull this from? As if black people are never the victims of crimes themselves, and far more subceptable to it if they live in poor, ghetto areas. I also know that statistics can be used, twisted around and manipulated to back up ANY stupid-a$$ racist claim/theory (which white people have been doing to black folks since they brought us here in chains). So I guess the KKK and other white supremacist groups that spent a good couple of hundred years murdering black people and anybody else who didn't fit their idea of a good, white Christian NEVER existed, and never did those things, either? What about all the damn horrible crimes committed against black people JUST for being black, or anybody else that wasn't white? Honestly, you and your fake statistics are full of s***. A look through any history book would put the lie to all that bull**** you cut-and-pasted. Another thing--how can black people commit ALL the crimes when we're the minority? WHite people are the majority (in the U.S.) so it would stand to reason that they commit at least over HALF the crimes, wouldn't it? How come most serial killer killers tend to be white--what's up with that? Hell, here in Michigan, this 20-year white boy is standing trial under accusations that he drowned his own two young children in a bathtub under scalding hot water--and the police believe he did it---explain THAT,please. Get off this racist bull****.

Not in high school, but I am white and went to North Carolina Central University, a "historically black" university. A small group of idiots acted like this, but usually they left me alone when I just ignored them. I had to be there during the Rodney King verdict and the OJ verdict. So many idiots came out of the wood work. Idiots come in all colors.
