@Ecthelion
If you managed to catch Henry Louis Gates' BLACK IN LATIN AMERICA last week on PBS, it's explained why Dominicans were ingrained into thinking that they were better than their Haitian cousins, which I've always found strange (and stupid as hell,since they ARE black)since they ALL came there on the same damn slave ships. And, BTW, ALL black students do NOT want to be rappers and NBA stars---the difference between blacks & Hispanics/Asians is that you didn't have nearly 400 years of living in a white society that constantly telling you that you were dumb,stupid,ignorant and less than human,deprived you of any and ALL human rights, making you hate & depise damn near EVERYTHING about yourself (your lips,hair,way of speaking) because you weren't white and enslaved you for nearly 300 years on top of that.
I grew up in a working-class black community where education WAS valued, and I grew up in a home where me & my siblings were taught that education was a priority--and no we weren't exceptions to the rules or anything like that--we were the norm,thank you very much (and,yeah, I'm black). Honestly, I am so sick & tired of people like you generalizing about black people as if ALL of us are just lazy & ignorant,as if none of us want to be anything---that is just so much racist bulls***. How the hell would YOU know,if you're never even visited a black person's home? Do you even KNOW any black people,for that matter? When you go to poor inner city schools that are underfunded in areas where there are NO jobs because all the factories have closed down & moved away, and where teachers have to work with little to no resources due to lack of support & basic school supplies, as well as being underpaid,and suburban schools in rich white school district getting more preference in funding, as well as the fact that this has been going on in this country for WELL over a hundred some years--plus black children's education not being valued to begin with by white society--and THAT'S what contributed to the problems you see in today's inner city schools---it's more complicated than black students being "the worst" as you put it. That does NOT excuse black kids today from doing well in school at all---and a lot of them here in Detroit do,despite the odds---I'm just pointing out the historical reason why these problem for them exist in the first place--which continue to this day.
Another things---Latinos/Asians don't have a claim AT ALL on having a culture and family ties--so do black folks-I know mine does---(plus your cultures have gangs too, just like anybody's else) and funny how you don't mention black Latinos and how they are seen as black by this society,period---BTW, Southwest Detroit is largely Latino--mostly Mexican,I believe---they're the minority here among us black folks, but they keep coming here, so apparently they don't have much of a problem with that, and they like their corner of this town. You also conveniently left out how Latinos themselves were discriminated against and basically treated like black people for the longest time, and white people saw then as nothing but cheap labor to use (like they do illegal immigrants today)for their own ends. And keep in mind, that if you live in Arizona, thanks to the new racist immigration law there, you can get stopped by the cops there at every roadblock if you even look remotely Latino to them, they can demand to see your passport/license/birth certificate. Basically if you don't have any of these, you can be hauled off to be deported on the spot. If you forgot to bring one of these with you,even if you are actually American, tough s***---you're automatically getting the boot back across the border. So stop with the "we're so much better than black people because we're not black and we kiss white folks' a$$es because they're so much more superior than everybody else on earth" bulls***. Hell, black people and Latinos (not the white ones) have WAY more in common due to a shared history of discrimination, being colonized/taught to hate ourselves/by white folks throughout this country's history. You've just bought into the white supremacist BS that says to be accepted as a true American, you must hate/disrespect black folks and treat them like s***, because that's how it's ALWAYS been done here in the U.S. Hate---it's as American as apple pie.
My problem with HALLS OF ANGER is that it only tells the story of integrating schools from the white perspective---when like marbleann said, it was historically primarily black children who bore the brunt of integration by being threatened, hit & spat on,beat up, basically everything she said. So, yeah, it's pretty damn biased because it dosen't tell the whole story, or even explain why the schools had to be integrated in the first place. I have to admit, I haven't seen the whole movie yet, but that's all I've gotten from it so far. I suggest you watch the 2nd part of BLACK IN LATIN AMERICA--it's about being black in Cuba.
