Jack Johnson

OK ,I know this was a Fictional account of Jack Johnson, and it was 1970, and nothing against James Earl Jones, but why James Earl Jones? it just shows the racism practice by hollywood ,the real life Guy was a very dark man,who had many women but this movie had to fictionalize his life! why? I wiil certainly do more research on Jack Johnson and see how much this movie changed the facts to entertain
YOU DONT HAVE TO BUMP THIS!BUT PLEASE RESPECT IT!

Why was James Earl Jones cast as Jack Jefferson in the movie version of "The Great White Hope"? Mr. Jones and Jane Alexander were the Tony award-winning co-stars in the hit Broadway production of the same and they recreated their roles for the film. Both received Academy Award nominations for the film.

ok thats one reason ,but I still find fishy

Yes I was disappointed with the script, I mean Jack won the title in Australia(my homeland) but going by the film he didn't, unfortuanly Australia treated him like crap, but that another story. But this this film was nothing like the real jack Johnson, there were quite a few things that were untrue in this film.

At least Australia did not stop men from fighting for world or other titles because of their skin color. Peter Jackson was a black man born in the West Indies who came to Australia as a child and learned to fight in Sydney. He won the Australian heavyweight title but John L Sullivan refused to defend against him because he was a "negro." Truth be told, the Boston Bully Boy was chicken.

reply

You don't know Sullivan was " chicken", and he probably wasn't. Doesn't make it right, just sayin'.

reply

That's my point exactly. Others keep claiming that this story was serious about the real story of Jack Johnson, but this movie is a far cry from the real man. They even changed the name, I suppose to give them more creative license. I still haven't heard any with a good reason why the true story of Jack Johnson shouldnt be told.

reply

yep, good point! It should have been about the real Jack Johnson

I'd love to see a Spike Lee film on Jack Johnson. Or John Singleton, or Ernest Dickerson for that matter. Hell, even a responsible white director. But I'd love to see his story told.

For that matter I'd like to see high quality films on Harry Greb, Jack Dempsey, Sonny Liston...etc etc

reply

Biopic a great idea.Working out what the true story was would be the difficulty!

reply

It was the early 70s. How old are you? To get a film like this released was probably pretty major.

So the PC police are not satisfied with an actor of the correct race, they are now wanting the correct shade?

reply
