Where is this film?

With the exception of a few haters, everyone (even Pauline Kael) seems to agree that this is one top film. But can I find a copy for less than about a hundred bucks? No, I can't!

What gives?

It looks like a double disc edition with Shebib's sequel, DOWN THE ROAD AGAIN, might have been released in Canada a few years ago, but that's apparently impossible to get, too.

Are there some rights issues going on here?

Given the near-unanimous praise, it seems strange the producers don't want to be making some extra cash from it.

Does anyone have a copy I can borrow/buy/swap? (And I would happily buy it again if it ever came out officially!)

You can watch it on youtube:

Where did you hear about the double disc being released?

reply

Thank you for that link. That's really helpful. For some reason I just presumed it wouldn't be on YouTube, so that'll teach me!

I have no idea whether the double-disc was ever released, although Canadian Amazon shows it ("currently unavailable", of course) so I just thought it must have come out at some point. Perhaps then it never did.

As I say, thank you for the heads-up - most appreciated.

Just bought the double disc at HMV on young st in Toronto where they had about 20 copies in both DVD and Blueray. It has very good bonus features and is worth the price.

That's probably all the copies that exist... figures they'd be on Yonge Street! Pete and Joey would be proud! Thanks for the info, I'll get one of my relatives to mail one to me!

I picked up the two-blu ray package, new, at a Canadian department store, Giant Tiger, for $3 yesterday. I have seen the sequel when it was released at WIFF (my city, Windsor's, film festival) and loved it. I can't wait to hopefully watch the original this evening! The extras are director commentaries for both, English subtitles for both, a making-of featurette for the sequel, and a cool SCTV parody (which I saw back in the early 80's when I was a boy) starring John Candy and Joe Flaherty. I hope you're able to find it and that you enjoy both films. Let us know if you remember to.

My only beef is that the original film is still the edited-for-PG cut that they had to make, in order not to get an R-rating.
