Under My Thumb

The version here is much grittier than the studio version. Was this a different approach to the song. Mick Jagger looks at Keith Richards right after they go into it and it could be a "What are we doing?" kind of look.

Anyway I like this muddier, dirtier version of Under My Thumb than the studio version.

The studio version rules. It has much more attitude and much moodier and conveys the superior attitude Jagger was singing about. This version though is good. It is nice to hear classics interpreted differently.

In an excellent radio documentary 'Shedding Hippy Blood', their then road manager Sam Cutler describes the Stones as a 'pressure band', who only tended to pull things together musically onstage & this is the reason their performances varied so much

'I pray that it's alright
I pray that it's alright...'

by this point, Mick knows it's completely out-of-control.
A very emotional segment, for me, when I think how young they were,
(Mick Jagger was only 26, I think), and all that responsibility,
of watching it fall apart, being powerless to turn it around.
I think MJ's actually quite heroic, trying to cool everyone (in front of
the stage) out. He was being very sincere.
Heartbreaking, actually.

I just watched Gimme Shelter, again, tonight. And as many times as I've seen it,
it still packs a huge emotional impact.
Great film.
