Alternate Versions

Are there alternate versions of Gimme Shelter that show more crowd violence at the shows before Altamont -- violence not linked to the Angels? I saw this many years ago and my recollection is that a fight broke out as they played "Sympathy For the Devil" at a venue before Altamont (MSG?), but the version I just saw (Criterion) showed a few people climbing onto the stage but no fighting.

"Sympathy For The Devil" on the Criterion (and every other) version is from Altamont.

There are no alternate versions of this movie. The most recent DVD does have a few extra performances in its bonus section.

Hopefully one day a new remastered edition of GIMME SHELTER will be released that will feature more Altamont footage (unlike WOODSTOCK, none has surfaced). I would love to see more performances from the other bands CSNY, Santana, Burritos, Jefferson Airplane as well as the Stones.

?? There are legions of Stones fans that care about more performance footage, thank you.

I completely care about the performance footage. Actually, I'd love to see an Altamont film that's nothing but performance. I've seen this documentary many times, and it's excellent, but the music takes a backseat to the violence. I hate when they start a song, then cut away to Melvin Belli and whatnot. This was a concert first and foremost – a concert that went horribly wrong, but that's not the music's fault.

Well, something has changed - something is different.

My cousin and I were watching this movie back around 1981 as it had been shown on Canadian Pay TV. They was a section where an Angel that was standing on the stage intensely looking at Mick was becoming more and more dangerous-looking as the seconds ticked by. He was looking directly at Mick and seemed to be hallucinating something. After about 20-30 seconds of this on film - and right at the point where he was clearly about to jump on Mick - another Angel took him out.

My cousin and I both looked at each other and said "did you see that? That guy was right nuts. If that Angel hadn't tackled him at the very last second, he woulda jumped right on Mick".

Well, I just watched the Criterion DVD - and that scene is gone. There is a crazy gut, but the angle is completely different, the time is less, and the intense staring at Mick is no longer there.

I would love to see a documentary from another perspective but I am sure the Stones own the rights to all the video of the concert and will not release it.

who' the hippies or the hells angels ? if so they'd point the finger at each other

You could do both sides.
