30 years between viewings

I first saw this movie on late night television when I was in high school(approximately 1980). It had a lasting affect on me and it was one of my favorite movies for many years although I never had another chance to see it until it came out on DVD last week. It has held up fairly well although as I figured it would, my esteem for it has fallen some. Elliot Gould is very good in it and the cinematography groundbreaking. Like most of Rush's stuff their is a satirical bent to it and the themes can run deep. But also like most of his other movies, they don't always work and are a bit disjointed. Anyway, this definitely deserves to be seen and not just as a period/genre film.

It has been nearly 40 years between viewings for me. The only time I had seen the movie was when it was first released in 1970. I was a college student at that time and could really relate to the movie in 1970.

I watched the DVD of this movie just last night. I, too was taken by how well the movie holds up all these years. Of course it is dated, but it is not have the phony cliches that a lot of student movement movies had from that time period. Watching the DVD brought back a flood of memories from that exact time period, for me. It was if this movie was actually written by someone who was very in tuned with the college students at that time. I really enjoyed the movie the second time around.

"Holds up well" Yea just like Billy Jack does.

In light of the rightward drift of politics in this country, I'd say both Getting Straight and Billy Jack hold up extremely well.
