This film is brilliant by the way, but to clarify, did Rohmer purposely distance Laura towards the second half of the film?

Wasn't that part of the plot? Jerome ran his experiment with Laura then started a new experiment with Clair? When he touched her knee the experiment was over. End of film. the bigger question is what did he learn from each experiment with each girl?
