A movie that I just don't get.....

Weird counterculture humor, that really misfires. In fact I can't think of another comedy movie that is unfunny as this one is.

This movie is definitely a product of its time, and it definitely won't be for all tastes. I guess you had to have lived through the late sixties/early seventies fully to "get" the vibe of this movie. I'm not saying that younger viewers won't get it, but, since I'm a child of that era, I guess I can more or less relate to the movie better than a lot of viewers - cringeworthy though it may be to do so. You're right, it's not a terribly funny movie. But it does have a few chuckles here and there especially for those of us who were young during that time period when everything seemed to be geared towards total repudiation - and for some, total annihilation - of the existing order.

A lot of movies from that time period have a similar flip, irreverent anti-establishment/counterculture vibe that more or less reflects the general spirit of the nation - especially the youth. It's really eerie in some ways to compare it to the current zeitgeist which has everybody more or less turned into corporate-controlled Wal-Mart-shopping zombies struggling to make their mortgage payments, worrying about their jobs and their 401-K's and their health insurance, and wondering when the next terrorist event is going to shake the country.

eric, the movie gas was a product of its time, however, it was made with big studio money, keep in mind hollywood is abusiness and so it was trying to capitalize on the hippy counter culture trend. Studio execs could care less about the counter culture, the hippys, their music, what was going on in the world. All they care about is money. Many of the counter culture filsm made during that period have lots of LSD imagery in it and follow a viruallty non linear format because studio execs figured that half the crowd that saw these films at drive ins would be either stoned or in the middle of pro creating, and most lilely they werer right. these days, most films are either dealing with the adam sandler comedies or dance hip hop movies. Its all about hte money.
