The rapes.

I saw the very, very end a long time ago and just kinda stumbled into the movie title again on an unrelated article from Wikipedia. This was something that bothered me about the otherwise goofy-and-stupid sounding movie; so I have the same exact question.

The way I saw it was that the footballers were barbarian-like warriors. They weren't intelligent, but brutish, and got their kicks by doing raids on what they thought were weaker "communities" and as part of the divide and conquer mentality, raping the women and pillaging the resources there was part of the "game".

The girls in question probably were playing against the presence of the "new liberated woman" that was growing dominant in the society of that time. These women seemed to go against what the feminists stood for, and were deliberate stereotypes of the kind of women who would feed into the egos of the footballers by wanting to be dominated, and got a kick out of the cavemen behavior of the footballers.

The way it seemed to me was that the 1st attempt of rape with the two football "warriors" was only a drill for their games of raping & pillaging. which seemed like a goofy, satirical way to play on jocks & barbarians.
the next rape was when the three men abduct the woman getting water, & she immediately took control by choosing the order of the men. & when her friend come to the rescue, the three "rapists" were defeated looking as she was chipper & seemed to be dominant over them.
What i mean to say is that yes Corman has bad taste, but i felt like he intentionally made the rapists look like morons.

the scene where the girl willingly takes on 3 rapists and later says

"if its gonna happen should lay back and enjoy it"

is infuriating and baffling

these old hippy movies are all for MALE rights to pleasure (not being drafted, being allowed to smoke pot) but have a horrendous attitude towards women
