Question about MPAA Rating....

What age group was this movie originally marketed to when it was in theaters? I'm curious to know if like many older films in this genre it was originally marketed to the 12/13+ boys. Thanks!

On November 1st, 1968, the MPAA's film ratings went into effect. The original four ratings were "G," "M," "R," and "X."

"Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" received the "M" rating, which stood for "mature" and "parental guidance suggested."

Children could view this film without having an adult come along.

Many films which received the defunct "M" rating have been re-rated. "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" was re-rated in 2004 with the "PG-13" rating.

Well Hammer was certainly trying to appeal to an older audience and this was one of their first efforts to contain what we might call graphic violence and adult themes. There isn't anything in it that a 13 year old can't handle but whether or not someone should sign off on their kids seeing this movie should be up to them.

If it were made today, scene per scene, it would be a hard PG-13.

I don't remember what the rating was, but I saw it alone at age 12 when it was originally released.

My parents let me see all the horror movies I wanted to see back then. I guess they weren't too worried about my social development...😉

I saw it 1st run also. My folks werent worried either. My Dad and Mom were Big fans of the Universal monster series. They let me see All the Horror flicks and I've got to say the Hammer movies were (and still are) top notch. They've held up Very Well over the years !!!!!

People weren't so delicate and over-sensitive about everything like they are today.
