Were the two hitchhikers lesbians?

I've seen the movie 2 or 3 times and I never got the impression that they were, but -- then again -- I didn't analyze it that deeply. I read a review today, however, that insisted the two hitchhikers were lesbians. Did anyone else get this impression? If so, please supply your evidence.

(Please no clichéd responses like, "So what if they were, what's the big deal?"; this is a legitimate question. Thanks).

I kind of assumed they were, but it wasn't essential to the plot, although the one actress that complained so much was highly entertaining. Dini

Well - anyone who has been around lesbians KNOWS those two are LESBIANS.

Where? In the car? On the highway? Where the two hitchhikers lesbians?

Thanks for the correction; I edited it.

Thanks. Bad grammar removes all sense of decency from my brain.

You were decent, but justifiably sarcastic, which got the point across without bashing me. I hate bad grammar as well, which is why I always give my posts a quick proof-read before posting, but I obviously missed this one, so thanks again!

I sometimes get a little carried away with it, I must admit.

For example, there's this thread on Alice in Wonderland... ouch! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/board/flat/193888473

I don't want to talk about it.

Helena Kallianiotes (the dark haired hitchhiker) goes on and on about filth, garbage, mankind yadda yadda and always says "I don't wanna talk about it." Then starts up again. She's great, wonder what happened to her.

Lol, thanks for the explanation. This shows you how long it's been since I saw the film! I've been meaning to give it a fresh viewing.

I had the feeling that Palm (the ranting one) would be too put off by the messiness of sex actually to do it with anyone, male or female. And that she and Terry may really be in love with each other, but only on a psychological level, not a physical one.

I see no reason to try to put these two women in any pigeonhole. Palm is just too strange.

Thanks for the insight.

I re-watched the movie after my last post and didn't see any conclusive evidence that they were anything other than good friends traveling together, which is different than saying they weren't lesbians. If they were, the movie doesn't tell us; it leaves it up in the air.

I'd say that's a good bet. And the one had that "Oh Mickey you're so fine ..." song spinning around in her brain.

I busted out laughing when I read that; thanks! 

A theatrical tool called Parallel Characterization may be in use here. I think it is up to the veiwer to decide who they are and if they represent or mirror other characters in the film. This film has a subtext. The hichhikers, imho, represent one or more of the main characters. The ladies act like a couple , but are they? Bobby and Rayette act like a couple , but are they?
Another interpretation: The hitchhikers could be viewed as one character. They give us a peek into Bobby's mind and soul.

Look for my post that explores the brilliant subtext in Five Easy Pieces.
