What's all the hype about? This was terrible.

Nicholson is one of my favorite actors and I thought I'd enjoy this movie more, but this is so bad! I can't believe this was nominated for four Oscars. And that sex scene between Bobby and Betty was just ridiculous.

Jesus is coming. Look busy.

Yes, that sex scene WAS ridiculous but I enjoyed the film as a whole. I felt it said a lot about relationships at the time (that the woman was supposed to 'stand by her man' no matter what and that was what Rayette was doing) and of course there was the turmoil Jacks character felt with his family and his past. I wish the ending felt a bit more conclusive as I don't like the fact that we have no idea what happens to him or Rayette afterwards but I hope it does work out for the two characters in the end because it was quite clear they were not meant to be together

You just didn't get it. Probably too deep for you.

It's an introspective character study of a man who's always running from himself. And probably one of the best examples of the type.

If you can't relate to it on some level, it's probably not going to resonate. But enough has been said about how it's a snapshot of the times, a bit like The Graduate or Easy Rider, it spoke to members of that generation who were feeling lost and without a clue of what they want; unable to fit in with any social group or established norms. Like Bobby Dupea, they rebelled against the grain and found their freedom, but they didn't know what to do with it. So you either sink or swim: this movie is about the former.

I've no doubt this movie served as an inspiration to movies like Good Will Hunting.

Perhaps you should watch the film again because frankly, I do not think that you understood it, nor Nicholson's superb performance. That being said, Five Easy Pieces is a film about a tortured and lonely soul whos past is haunting him into making "questionable" decisions.

The talk/confession that Robert Dupea had with his father answered many of the questions that I had heading into that scene. However, it was the scene in the car when Nicholson threw a tantrum that got me intrigued. Another scene that left me with questions is when he played a piano concerto on the freeway. LOL. He seemed to be playing pretty darn easily, playfully and happened to play a powerful piece by Chopin which reflected his feelings at the time??? Why doesn't he work in the music field? Why does he feel like getting his hands dirty instead?

A phenomenal character study.. one of the very best and honest acting performances I have ever seen. The 70s were a phenomenal decade for American films... not least of all was Five Easy Pieces.

I agree. I watched this film because of the 4 Oscar noms. Just a dull film
