Disappointment in the New Soundtrack

Although the new release has ten tracks previously unavailable, four of these were never used in the film:
Track:
2. Nebula
18. In Search of the Ancient Astronaut (only the tiniest fraction appears in a film; electonic noise from the beginning of the track)
23. Ancient Astronaut Samba
29. Theme from Chariots of the Gods (US single version)

I would have no objection to these inclusions, if there weren't so many important musical cues being omitted.

What's still missing (not knowing the titles of these missing musical cues, I can only call them by the names of the sections of the film they're used in):

* Cargo Cult/ Aztec Festival /People the World Over/ Tibetan Kangyur/ Mahabharata
* 'Foreknowledge of an Atomic Explosion'
* Cairo (a reprise of album Track 10, "The Map of Piri Reis," segueing into different score)
* Egypt Section: Pyramid of Chephren/ The Sphinx / Tomb of Sethos II / Mummy
* Relocating Abu Simbel
* 'Bound for Baalbek'
* Tassili Section: 'Strange Creature' / 'Starry Desert Sky' /Consternation/ Rock paintings / The Great God Mars/ Astronaut
* Mexico/ Museo Nacional/ Calendar of the Sun
* Tula: 'Ladder Hung in the Sky'
* Merida; Descendants of the Maya
* Olmec Stone Heads
* Flying to Palenque
* Easter Island (longer, alternate version to the one on Track 17 of the album)
* Market of Pisac (an abridged version of this cue appears on the album, listed as "Popular Myth and the Destruction of Sodom")
* Door of the Sun
* "Found on all continents"
* 'Giants pose their silent questions"
* Nazca lines

There's a little over thirty minutes of unreleased score.

Apart from these missing cues, certain of the included cues have problems. Track 17 - 'Easter Island' is missing its first half, included in the film. And there is the problem that the names Peter Thomas gives certain pieces doesn't necessarily reflect their use in the film. Track 9 'Chichen Itza: Temple of the Virgins' is actually used in during 'Elijah/Ezekiel/Angels of Promise.'

Track 5 - 'Popular Myth & the Destruction of Sodom' is two musical cues both incorrectly combined and incorrectly labeled. The first half is used during The Market of Pisac; the second during The Fresco of Decani. Track 15 - 'Wondina Came From Heaven to the Mortals Too' is used during the cenoté, or "Sinister Well" at Chichen Itza. (What the hell is 'Wondina?' The goddess of the Australian aborigines is called 'Wandjina,' and the section of the film that deals with her has no musical score.)

Don't get me wrong - I love that they've released a new version of the score, and the release of such tracks as 'Mount Palomar: Eye into the Sky,' 'Decani Monastery and the Ruins of Zimbabwe,' 'The Map of Piri Reis,' 'Memnon Colossi,' 'Monte Alban,' and 'Ukrainian Cave Painting' are fabulous. It's just that nearly half of the film's greatest scores are still missing. There needs to be another release, a 2-CD version. [yes]

New: Here is a comprehensive overview of the sections of the film containing the missing Peter Thomas Orchestra cues:

Douglas Payne, who runs a blogspot, says that he helped produce this album.
http://dougpayne.blogspot.com/2009/02/peter-thomas-sound-orchestra-cha riots.html

I corresponded with him, and he replied that "there really wasn't much more than about two and half minutes of surviving music available to us that we opted not to include on the disc. One and half of these minutes were just Moog synthesizer background cues that weren't very musical and in fact, were kind of annoying without visuals. The other piece was very similar to two other pieces already on the disc that hadn't been issued before. We really did try to offer the most complete soundtrack experience possible. Also, Peter Thomas himself never indicated to us that there was music that was left out or forgotten. Here's more about what we did: [link back to the blogspot]
Hope this allays any concern."

The problem seems to be that Peter Thomas didn't volunteer that there was any more. Of course there is, as any fan of the film would be aware. It's a pity that these still remain archived somewhere.
