Why was this film rated X?

Anyone know?

reply

I know this was orginally rated X, then censored/cut down R.

I saw the trailer on a "Something Weird Video" movie trailer compilation.
The trailer can be seen on youtube sometimes also depicting the X-rating.

Keep in mind the X-rating was originally for mainstream hollywood films like:
Last Tango in Paris with Marlon Brando
Midnight Cowboy with Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight (Oscar for Best Picture)
A Clockwork Orange directed by Stanley Kubrick

I hope this Info helps.

Right, because adult films would self-apply the X as a marketing tool.

Even The Owl and the Pussycat started life with an X rating, until some of the dialogue and the shot of Streisand's bare breasts were trimmed. Even today, the only DVD version available has Streisand's use of "fock" deleted, though it remained in the original R-rated release print.

Back in the late 60's/early 70's, even a quick flash of frontal nudity resulted in an automatic "X" rating, which applied to IF..., MIDNIGHT COWBOY, MEDIUM COOL, and this film. As I recall there's also a scene where a guy is having sex with a chicken, or it's just suggested, which would be enough for the MPAA at the time. Almost all of those films were re-rated "R" later.

Other films like DE SADE and MYRA BRECKINRIDGE would get an "X" just for the sexual-related material, even without the more graphic nudity.
