The message of the film

What is the message here? What is the film trying to say? I can't say I really enjoyed it, it isn't a pleasant film. But what is it all about?

I never read the novel. But the movie, for me at least, seemed to say that people all over the place are "crazy"; not just those who are institutionalized. Horner appears to be the "normal" one, compared to the rest of the other characters.

Not entirely sure as to what to think of the whole thing, but it certainly seems to have a far-reaching ambition to comment on the ills of the (then-) contemporary world, but everything comes out rather broad and elusive. And "everyone is crazy" doesn't quite cut it for me as the answer... or, at any rate, it would have required a better focused narrative to illustrate some pervasive institutional lunacy.
