DVD

Does anyone know where I can get this on DVD? I've checked Amazon and ebay and it doens't seem to be available on either. I have a region free DVD player and have no qualm about importing....

I was having the same problem myself, I've been looking for a DVD release for some time.

I bought mine in Belgium (where I live). I'm not sure it's useful to you, because it's Japanese with Dutch subtitles; I don't think you understand any of those languages, or do you?

But it did happen

This DVD looks very promising. It appears to be a Japanese import with English subtitles, I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere though.

Other DVDs of it I've found...

Apparently there's an out of print Chinese release of it with English subtitles, but they're basically "Engrish" and impossible to comprehend. Apparently the picture quality is shocking too.

The French edition of the DVD looks awesome, but has no English subtitles

Here is a list of all available releases of it on DVD...

I've actually found a place to buy the version with English subtitles that I previously mentioned, however it is ridiculously priced at $69.99

The subtitles on the chinese release that you linked to are really, really horrible. I'd rather watch it without subtitles at all than with those.

It's really strange how there doesn't seem to be any decent english-subbed release of this at all, even though it's in my opinion one of Kurosawa's best. There is a Laserdisc from Criterion, though. :P

I have a swedish DVD of it, myself. Only nordic subs :/

reply

Haha yeah, even though it did terribly when it was released/Kurosawa attempted suicide due to its failure... its one of my favourites too. (Perhaps its failure/the suicide are a taboo subject resulting in its DVD release being delayed)

English subtitles for the film definitely exist. I saw it on an old VHS here in Australia (recorded off of a television channel over here - 'SBS') that had perfectly fluent subtitles. That particular channel have their own foreign language division who often create their own subtitles though, so they probably did it themselves to broadcast.

reply

They exist, sure, just not on DVD. The best available option for an english-subbed release is almost certainly the Criterion LaserDisc, but how many people have a laserdisc player nowadays? <.<

Great news! Akira Kurosawa's classic Dodes'Ka-den will finally be arriving to DVD via the Criterion Collection in the first half of 2009!
