Cromwell and Drogheda

How "Irish" would the defenders of Drogheda have been? I seem to recall hearing that Drogheda was an English Planter town, and Cromwell attacked it for being a hold-out Royalist stronghold, rather than for being a town full of Irish rebels.

You heard right - the garrison of Drogheda was almost entirely composed of English Royalists. It had to be taken, because otherwise Cromwell would have had a subtantial Royalist force threatening his rear.

The english catholic commander was beating to death with his own wooden leg by the blood thirsty roundhead troops, because they thought he had money hidden.
