I Really wanted to like this, but...

I'd read about this here & on Amazon & I ordered it on dvd a few weeks back.

One of THE slowest moving, & frankly- boring of the Hammer series, IMO.

The title *is* a bit misleading, as it isn't a proper vampire film.

Ingrid was pretty hot though. :)

That is probably because you grew up watching more films made for a restless youth market that grew up with digital editing and faster paced films of another generation. The story took its time much like the classics in literature did. It is no slower than the first Christopher Lee Drac flick for instance, and even the later films in that series. And since it is based on the story of Countess Elisabeth Bathory, she was ghoulish in quite another way and certainly earned the title of Countess Dracula, since she was just as bloodthirsty as was Valdimir Tepes, the inspiration to the Dracula novel by Bram Stoker.

And all the young buxom women in this movie were hot.

Nah- born in '68. :)

There was no tension at all in this IMO. CL was Definitely a huge part of that looming doom before he struck. With this one, I think there was *slightly* more emphasis on sex & less on a feeling of dread. I didn't feel threatened by the Countess' character at all.

I thought it was hilarious the way they justified the title right at the end by having the villagers whisper "Countess Dracula! Countess Dracula!"

I don't see what's wrong with the title. It's meant to be symbolic, not literal as in she'll turn into a bat and suck the blood right out of your neck.

I bought this set mainly because of Vampire Lovers. After watching both flicks I thought this was the better one.

Hmm, IIii dunnooo....

I do think the Hammer producers took advantage of the success of their other vampire films & the vampire film 'craze' of the late 60s/ early 70s. By using the name "Dracula" in the title, they knew damn well *that* name comes w/ a huge reputation & connotations. "Countess Bathory" would've been more appropriate, IMO.

Yeah, it was a marketing strategy to sell as many tickets as possible. For the same reason their film loosely based on Boudica was named "The Viking Queen" because they thought it would sell more tickets than if it were called "Queen Boudica" or "The Celtic Queen."

Agreed. Watching "The Vampire Lovers" and then watching this, it's a very noticeable step down. "The Vampire Lovers" is filled with gorgeous production values and a moody, Gothic atmosphere that is palpable. "Countess Dracula" has none of these and is just plain boring. There's no suspense to the story at all. It's just the Countess changing her appearance every couple of days to get it on with a younger man. It could have used a mystery angle, like one of the characters suspecting or noticing something strange and slowly finding clues and figuring out what was going on. Instead, everybody just seems oblivious. There's virtually no build up at all, and then (after what seems like three hours) it just ends.

Major disappointment. I'd steer people clear of it and recommend "The Vampire Lovers" instead.
