The real Christine Jorgenson didn't wear female clothing when she was a child. In fact, she didn't wear female clothing until after she received her revised passport under her new name.
Strangely, it is still this way today in a lot of states because you can't change the gender on your I.D. until you've had the surgery. I think they dress as femme anyway and just take their chances.
