Dan Nodeen has been absolutely hell-bent on killing Billy The Kid for years for what Billy did to him. I find it hard to believe that Murphy dying would make him give up so quickly, especially when he is so close to exacting his revenge.
It is true that Nodeen might not get paid for it now, but I still think he would try to get Billy.
This ending makes no sense to me.
Murphy's men were out numbered. What else was he going to, arrest Chisum, and his men? "That will be the day" Nodeen was a coward for shooting down McSween in cold blood, Of course he had no other choice but to run!
The town's power base changed immediately with the death of Murphy, Nodeen would have been locked in the jail, tried and hung for McSween's murder after the smoke cleared for sure so he wasn't sticking around.
