The Carousel

I loved his performance of the song "Have a Happy." It was wonderfully fun. I'm pretty sure those were his relatives on the ride too.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

Except it didn't fit.

His songs at the beginning and at the end worked because there was a reason to be singing and he had musical instruments.

But this movie wasn't a musical, so although in musicals it's perfectly acceptable to break into song and have a full orchestra behind you, it didn't work for this movie.

To me, this was actually a pretty good movie and I don't understand why it didn't do better. Elvis and the girls gave really good performances, but that carousel song hurt the movie, not because it was a bad song, but because it came out of nowhere and didn't make sense artistically.

Plus the camera effects where they zoomed in on the bizarre-looking bug-eyed merry-go-round horses, I was wondering if they were setting something up where the little girl freaked out after being scared by the horses.

My bet is Col. Parker had some clause in the movie that Elvis had to perform musically on screen a certain minimum amount of time and they needed like 3 minutes to hit that figure.

The song is cute enough but it didn't really fit. The other songs fit better and were better songs too.
