How did this movie get a G rating/attempted rape scene.

Being that this movie got a G rating, I thought the attempted rape scene was a cringe-inducing event not appropriate for children to see.

The only explanation I can offer is that the MPAA rating system was in it's infancy (established in 1968 after the Production Code fell apart in 1966-67) and so the powers that be were still 'finding their way'.

Remember, Midnight Cowboy was the one (and only) X-rated movie to win Best Picture (for calendar year 1969; award given in ~March 1970) and there's hardly any nudity in it.

MPAA had G, PG, R, and X at that time.

I suspect Col. Parker lobbied for a G rating.

Actually the ratings in 1969 were G, M (for mature), R and X.

Then the M rating was changed to GP and then PG.

In the early days of the MPAA rating system there were some surprisingly violent films (many of them westerns) that received a ā€˜Gā€™ rating. They've always been more lenient when it comes to violence. If the attempted rape scene here had featured a bare boob it would have undoubtedly gotten an 'R' rating. Without the boob it's a 'G'.
