so did she stay or go? (spoiler)

I don't get the end of this. Did MTM stay as a nun or leave to join Dr. Elvis?

she joined E, how could she not!

I haven't seen this in a long time but I think she remained a nun. They showed all that Catholic imagery to show how much more important that is than her feelings. If it was now, she would certainly have left the convent but not then.

I disagree. Now she wouldn't have become a nun at all. She was typical of young nuns back then. I had them in school. Found out later several of them left. As did the young deacons and priests who worked at my parish in the 70s.

The ending was to let the viewer decide for themselves what choice she made. I think she chose to be with Dr. Carpenter. Mother Superior explained the two ways she could choose to love God and then said an outside source(Dr. Carpenter visiting her)might help her make a decision. Sister Irene told her that she would not be happy until she saw John again and then they went to the church service where he was. I do not know whether the writers expected the viewer to think Sister Irene knew he would be there, but if she did, that would further show Michelle that she was fine with her choosing to be with John. It is true that the last things she looks at are the religious statues and the last thing she thinks about is her being a nun and she looks pained, but I think that her friends would help her see that she does not need to feel bad for choosing to not be a nun.
