Who Did Mary Tyler Moore Choose???

Elvis or God? Or are they one in the same?

reply

Very intentionally, not wanting to offend either of two zealous fanatic fan bases (Elvis or Gods's) the producers left it completely open-ended which way she was going to go.

You don't have to be a nun to serve God. She chose John/Elvis.

I loved that ending because it's us to us as viewers.

You know she choose Elvis. Once he plays te "baby" card she can have a family to raise and bring them in to the faith.

I sort of feel the same way about the ending of The Sopranos...but it don't make it right.

I think she chose to be with Dr. Carpenter(Elvis) and serve God as a married woman and here are my reasons: I don't know whether the viewer was supposed to think that Sister Irene knew Dr. Carpenter would be at the church service, but if she did, then that would show Sister Michelle(Mary Tyler Moore) that she approved of her choosing not to be a nun. And the Mother Superior even said that maybe an outside source(Carpenter visiting her) might help her make her decision. While this certainly does not mean Mother Superior took one side or the other, I think it shows that she would not think bad of Sister Michelle for choosing to leave the order. This would further make it easier for Michelle to choose to be with Dr. Carpenter.
