The Smithee

Does anyone know the story about why McCowan wanted a Smithee for this TVM?

reply

I don't know, but the over-reliance on flashbacks (representing, for me anyways, the film's only glaring flaw) feels like padding that was perhaps put in there for time requirements. This was, afterall, a made-for-tv-movie that had to fill a specific amount on air time. Therefore maybe MacCowan objected to that aspect of the final cut. Just a theory.

(edit): I saw it again tonight and it holds up remarkably well. I think Macowan should have been proud to put his name on this tidy action classic.

For some reason on the credits it is spelled Allen rather than Alan Smithee.

I don't think I've seen this since it's original broadcast and my recollection is that it was pretty good so I'm surprised to see the Smithee credit here. Of course it's been over 40 years so my memory could be suspect.
