What a quote!!!

"Didn't you know that a suspect must be considered guilty? No one is innocent. All men are guilty. They're born innocent but it doesn't last. We all change for the worse."

In my opinion it's one of the greatest film quotes ever. Did Melville invent this? Because the quote atributed to Buddha in the beginning was made up by Melville himself. Buddha didn't say such thing.

Brilliant movie btw.

For sure, must have been Melville, as he's the screenwriter, too. It's the same deal as the opening quote in 'Le Samourai'...again thanks to Melville.

The opening quote was attributed to Ramakrishna. Maybe Ramakrishna made it up, but I don't see why Melville would've made up a story about the Buddha, then attributed it to Ramakrishna.

Sorry, I don't know about the other quote.

Actually, Melville made it up along with the excerpt from the Bushido.

Do you have proof? Not that I don't believe you, I just think you're lying through your teeth.

On the Le Cercle Rouge DVD, Rui Noguiera points out that Melville made them up.

If you would be a fan of Melville, actually you would knew, that Melville made up those two "quotes"... That's his art...

I guess I'm not really a fan then. Ok, I confess it, I hate him. I just came here to spread my poison. Curse you!

No, Melville surely didn't invent this.
It all goes back to two philosophers: Rousseau and Hobbes, who are most famous for their views regarding humans. Rousseau believed that humans are born innocent and spoiled throughout the process of growing up and Hobbes believes that humans are born evil and need to be freed from this evil during their lifetime.
