great film but

how did vogel know that corey's meeting with mattei posing as the fence was a trap ?

was there a scene cut from this ? i'm sure the version i saw was not 140 mins

He didn't knew in advance, but he told Corey at Corey's appartment (before Corey was leaving to meet Mattei) that he (Vogel) was going to be around at the place (castle) where Corey wanted to exchange the merchandise with Mattei. Vogel at the park must have found out it was a trap.

I think it was simply his criminal instinct.

He originally wanted to go with them probably because he didn't know the fence and was suspicious. He must have followed them and then either spotted the cops on the property or looked in and seen Mattei. I'm not sure why people are so hung up on this. It's not really important - he could have any number of reasons for being there, but he HAD to be there because it was fated.

Yes, I just presumed he'd spotted some cops.
