Winters & Varsi

Never could understand the appeal of Shelley Winters, even young She could be described as a Cow or Sow, neither flattering. That voice is like fingernails on the blackboard. All you need is bread and cheese, Shelley always supplied the Ham. With this film She at least reached the level Her talent deserved.

Diane Varsi is a cautionary tale on how NOT to handle your career. With a promising start in PEYTON PLACE (1957) garnering a Oscar nomination, She broke her contract with the Studio. Not the best of moves for someone just starting in Hollywood. Ending up at A.I.P. and shlock like this was the final result. Barely recognizable until I checked the credits.

These are people, not ciphers. Winters knew very well what her limitations were and made the most of them. Take for example her performance in A Place in the Sun. She was perfect for roles like that. Varsi was not interested in the culture of show business. She was an artistic soul who was quickly lost (consumed) in the celebrity business of Hollywood, so she had a breakdown and left it. Not everyone is driven to "manage a career" when it comes to living their life. We pay our money and can watch some of their work. Their lives are their own and not our business, no matter what the likes of TMZ tries to tell us.
