A direct sequel going off in a different direction to what might have been expected

Luke/Taylor both lost hope in the face of overwhelming odds. End up sacrificing themselves to set things right (ok maybe more extreme in Taylors case)

Luke restores hope to a faltering cause. Taylor is dying and so disgusted with the world that he decides it's time to end it all. But both movies DO go in an unexpected direction.
