I see this as Pike, clinging on to the machine gun, unbelieving at everything he and Dutch have just been through, and before he becomes oblivion, before everything, this fever dream begins...

also this explains why everyone from the Wild Bunch is in it, except for Pike - who is the dreamer/observer/camera himself... fan theory confirmed!
