Why R?

I know this is a dumb question since it's a Peckinpah movie but why is this rated R?

There are certain amounts of nudity in the film, though none of it is gratuitous, and some minor violence. But back then, we didn't have any rating between 'PG' and 'R' like we do now with the 'PG-13' rating. And a 'PG-13' is certainly what this film would receive nowadays, in my opinion.

It's just a PG here in England, and I think that's fine for it.

Thats not true that nudity would automatically bring an R rating in the 70's.
Seems likes the ratings board allowed quite a bit while keeping a PG rating. Films like Day of the Jackal, Outlaw Josey Wales, Little girl who lived down the lane.... and there were several more in the 70's. I am not saying they were gratuitous but they were certainly not expected in a PG movie. In Jackal, for instance, we see a lady who seduces a politician get up out bed after sex exposing her tits and ass and its not just a glimpse or a quick camera shot either.

Stella Stevens ass. Several times.

LoL, it's 18A on Itunes store.

Nudity mostly. It's surprisingly short on violence, especially for a Peckinpah movie.

That had me scratching my head too. There was hardly any violence at all, and people on this thread keep mentioning the nudity but at that time Americans weren't quite as ridiculously prudish about nudity as today. Lots of 1970s and 1980s movies had nudity with a PG rating. Up until the "Religious Right" started gaining ground in the 1990s, it wasn't that rare. I can't see how two brief butt shots would get this movie an R.

The scene where Joshua/David Warner has his hands inside that woman's shirt and is fondling her boobs, comes to mind. While there is no nudity, it's a pretty sexually explicit scene, especially for 1970.

When I was a kid, I would see this movie on TV, and that scene was not included. I spent a summer in Europe when I was a teen, and they played the movie uncensored on TV. I was shocked when I saw this scene. And I have to admit, I was turned on by it too, but hey, I was a teen.

In the scene where she is taking a bath in the barrel and Jason Robards is rubbing her down with a washcloth she exposes her nipples on at least a few frames. Not that I agree that it should have been rated R for that.
