Question About The Ending (Spoiler Alert)

I was surprised that Cable died at the end. I actually thought that his legs had been broken when the car ran over him, but I did not see the accident as fatal. What was the nature of the accident that it killed him?

That was the intention. To put it as if it was nothing at first with the characters joking and suddenly changing in a quick editing.
Really doesn't matter much what exactly kind of injury he had for the narrative.

Yes, I was a bit disappointed at that ending myself. I saw the car coming and saw it as an "Oh no! He's about to die! ... Oh, whew! He's okay!" And the humor in the fake ceremony while he was alive added to it. "Ah, he's just being a big baby and they're humoring him!" Then all of a sudden, they really are all dressed in black! What the heck!?

Definitely one of my least favorite endings to an otherwise good movie. But I can overlook a crappy 5 minutes at the very end and enjoy the rest of the movie.

The car ran over his lower half, crushing many internal organs. Probably died from internal bleeding or sepsis.

Problem is that the film shows the wheels going over his legs only.
