Read about this film many times and first time viewing. I DVR'd it so will watch again. Not that good. Sad. From all the hype, thought it would be better. Sad.

Hype? What Hype?

This movie hasn't aged well, but neither has Midnight Cowboy or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I think the film works within the platitudes it was based on. It's a little maudlin in its drama, sure, but I didn't find it all that sad or disappointing.

This strikes me as a remnant from the old mutual-admiration days between left-leaning Jews and blacks. It hasn't aged any better than that love affair itself but Zero Mostel is always wonderful.

It starts off being rather funny, just does not sustain it.
