Also one of the earliest appearances of a very young Martin Sheen, and it also contains great performances by actors you've seen a million times but never knew them, like John Anderson and Albert Salmi. A powerful statement on the contradictions of war and the agony of the human condition.

Actually, Sheen was 30 years old in 1970 when he appeared in this, and he had numerous acting credits prior, his first being in 1956.

Oh man, I agree. This performance was splendidly cast. And I don't know whether contemporary actors, however good they are, would understand how to taper their performances for the camera or to fill them out for same, as this cast gives us!

Indeed! But I've always wondered why they wasted the talents of such actors as Ford Rainey, Alan Hale Jr., Ken Tobey, etc. by using them as essentially "window dressing" in totally non-speaking roles.

Remember, this is based on a play. A lot of these actors, likely, just wanted to be associated w/this prestigious production.
