"If anyone catches on to the fact that we're turning around...."

"...I'll give 'em some double talk."

Does he ever! I've tried to memorize what Dean Martin says to the "young navigator" who does notice they're turning, but I trip over my tongue.. It's one of my favorite lines in the film.

"I'll tell you, son. Due to a setsel wind, DISTOR's vectored us into a 360 tunstun of slower traffic. Now, we'll maintain this bordon hold until we get a fortamagnus clearance from Malnix."

 "fortamagnus" sounds like a Transformer!

Be cautious if you see a light at the end of the tunnel. It could be an oncoming train.

The other thing I like about that scene -- and the long medium shot of Dino as he says the long speech -- is that its pretty clear he is using cue cards, and didn't have to memorize all this gibberish.

The cue cards give this scene a touch of "The Dean Martin Show."

Hey, don't knock Dino in Airport. IMO he showed real acting chops. His plea to Guerrero was terrific and obviously did not involve cue cards.

Whoa, movieghoul...

...I thought Dino was very good in Airport. He was fairly daring to take the role at all...it called for serious acting and a certain smarminess to the character as a "chronic cheater."

But that one scene is almost like a "guest appearance from Dino on the Dean Martin show."

On the other hand, in his role as Captain Vernon Demarest, Dean IS trying to stop that kid from giving away the show; its a dramatic scene, after all.

---

A biography on Dean Martin noted that after he got unfair bad reviews for "Toys in the Attic"(in a very serious role), Dino decided to only make silly sex entertainment from then on(Matt Helm, some sex comedies.) But he still could be serious when he wanted to be -- an evil villain in the Western "Rough Night at Jericho," a stalwart hero in the Western Five Card Stud...

...but most of all, Airport. Where he plays a character with a lot of edge(like how he constantly insults brother-in-law Burt Lancaster -- who, alas, lacks Martin's near-perfect looks here) and heart.

Plus...boy do we feel confident knowing that Dino is the main pilot of that plane!

It paid off financially. Already rich from his TV show and Vegas, Dino got his biggest payday ever from percentages on Airport.

There...I hope I have redeemed myself!
