What ever happened to the actress Susan Dey?

Her career never took off.

She has a short run as Laurie Partridge during the now-iconic 1970s television sitcom and then years of not much. She never had much of a film career ( The film Looker was supposed to be her “breakout role” and the fact that most people have never heard of it tells you how that went) and she was fortunate enough to land her best role as Grace on the legal drama LA Law.

After LA Law, she was on another series with the late actor Jay Thomas for a season where she was good (at least I thought so) but she was replaced due to a purported lack of chemistry. While she had minor roles following that, her career pretty much wrapped itself up in 2004 and she has only a few credits since then.

Some thoughts:

She was never a strong comedic actress
She has a unique look that worked well for her when she was a young woman, but didn’t carry itself into her later years
She wasn’t a Shakespearean or a stage actress.
She didn’t choose her film roles well…or they weren’t chosen well for her. She didn’t do anything that would have gotten better or more roles.

She failed to embrace The Partridge Family, even though it was a major part of her career.
Ms. Dey simply found out what a number of actors do: You will probably only get one good role and you had better make the best of that. In her case, she fortunately received two; however she seems to hate one and has failed to capitalize upon it when the opportunities to do so have been right in front of her for decades.

I was at a clinic / daycare / whatever, and the best parking spot was reserved for the director, Susan Dey. I was very curious if it was the same Susan Dey but I think I read in a bio that made it sound like it wasn't the case. Funny, though. Lovely woman. I'd love to see what she looks like now.

From wikipedia:

Dey has been married to her second husband, television producer Bernard Sofronski, since 1988. ... She serves as a board member of the Rape Treatment Center at UCLA Medical Center and co-narrated a documentary on campus rape with her former L.A. Law co-star Corbin Bernsen.
