Okay, I am kind of confused about their relationship. You see them together in several episodes during the 7 seasons (except the season dating around 1974 because the actress, Diana Muldaur, was filming the TV series "Born Free" in Africa) but then after that their relationship continued. What I don't understand is that during the time of their relationship, he was dating and was with other women. They had a strange relationship which was even more stranger in the last episode of the series "McCloud Meets Dracula" where he makes a comment like "as far as everybody is concerned, we're just good friends". Yet in "The Return of Sam McCloud" movie, she's there and he seems to have had feelings for her all the time because while talking to her in the cemetery he says "you let the importance things slip by, like those that you love" and he looks at her. Go figure!

I always figured they were both all about their careers. He never indicated that he would be happy staying in New York, which was her world, and she had no desire to live in Taos, which was his. The demands of their careers were always interfering with their time together, as well. If Sam wanted to be a father which was probably the norm to his way of thinking, Chris didn't seem to want to take time off to have children. They accepted that and didn't try to have an exclusive relationship, but it was apparently deep and lasting. I don't see that as strange. I see that as mature when two people who love each other realize that it is never going to go anywhere because they want different things but stay friends anyway. Sam was the eternal optimist and Chris was the realist so she would have been the one to say they weren't going to change and that was that.
