Syndicated newspaper comic strip?

As a kid, in the early seventies I seem to remember a syndicated newspaper strip loosly based on McCloud or Coogan's Bluff. It had a rural law enforcer (sheriff, marshall or ranger from Arizona, Kansas or Texas) joining an urban (New York, Chicago, or whatever) police force. He kept his stetson and his 45 single action army revolver. But I can't remember his name, nor the name of the comic strip (though they probably share the same name) and without that name there is no way to do a google search for it. It was not a comedy strip, but instead it was as dramatic as shall we say Modesty Blaise. Can anybody help me here?

Maybe "Latigo" by Stan Lynde?

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I didn't see it any sooner.

About Latigo Wikipedia says: "Set in the old West, it told the adventures of..."

So no, the comic strip I'm looking for was set in contemporary times in a big city. I remember it as something very close to McCloud or Coogan's Bluff.
