Where do you rank TMTM show in the history of great sitcoms

Taking everything into account. The quality of each episode, the success of the show, the Iconic characters, keeping the quality going over the length of the shows run.
I can only think of a few shows in the same neighborhood.
Cheers
The Cosby Show
Seinfeld
Friends
All in the Family
I Love Lucy

I would agree with your list. Cheers is my number1 show.Somehow it really spoke to me then and now .. but only the Diane years.

The only sitcoms I have the complete DVD collection for are DICK VAN DYKE and MARY TYLER MOORE.

Cheers
The Cosby Show
Seinfeld
Friends

Easy choice. Hated all the above, tried to not watch.

REMOVE THE UN-FUNNY COSBY SHOW from the list.
Thank GOD you did not put the UN-FUNNY M*A*S*H on there. Thanks

MASH had good comic writing its first four seasons or so before it degenerated into The Alan Alda Show with that awful self-righteous soapboxing it became known for. Altman, who didn't make a dime off the series, hated it and the celebratory air with which the series was feted at the time. 30+ years has not been kind to MASH, however, and I imagine it is remembered far less fondly now.

MTM has been my all-time favorite show for decades. It's the perfect show IMO.

other comedies that are high quality

Cheers (the Diane years)
Frasier
Golden Girls
The Cosby Show
Everybody Loves Raymond

Cheers (the Diane years)
Frasier

The yuppie "aren't' we sophisticated" crowd type shows.

And no, Boston is not full of unfunny smart-mouthed unlikable boring people like on Cheers, including Miss "Carla". Even the producer's name "Les Charles" turns me off for some reason. No humor, no wit..just TALKING AT each other.

Then we have Frasier, with the prissy star with the gay face and under-bite you want to face-slam really hard.

Sitcoms died in the 80s-90's. Bye-bye ⚓

The Honeymooners
Burns and Allen
The Jack Benny Program
I Love Lucy

I'd suggest adding "Taxi", "Barney Miller" and "Bob Newhart Show" to that list.

reply

Cheers
Northern Exposure
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
Red Dwarf
Jeeves and Wooster
The Bob Newhart Show
The Dick Van Dyke Show
Taxi
All in the Family
The Larry Sanders Show

I'm glad that the "The Honeymooners" got a nod.

I'd add:

"The Andy Griffith Show" [The Don Knotts years]
"The Odd Couple"
"WKRP in Cincinnati" and
"The Wonder Years" [which is brilliant, but hard to compare to other sitcoms].
