Where did Mary park her car at home

It doesn't look like there was a garage at the house. With the bad winters that Minneapolis has, I don't remember Mary ever saying anything about scraping the ice and snow off her car.

Well, the real estate listing for the actual house says it has an attached 3-car garage.

reply

oh cool. I didn't know that. I have looked at pictures of the house when it has been for sale; I just don't remember the garage. I'm sure Mary was glad about that!

This is television. Almost nobody parks their car in a garage, even when the show is supposed to be in a cold climate area. Heck, even the Brady's didn't park their car in the car-port most of the time.

The show established that her first apartment was in a house that had been converted to apartments from a single family home. It's not unusual, even in Minnesota, for apartments not to have garages.

I wouldn't be surprised if her later apartment didn't have a garage as well. Considering that the exterior shots were that of a low income housing development (from what I've heard) it probably didn't.

Um she moved into a "high rise" apartment Downtown I guess that I would assume had a garage in the basement.

I don't recall any exterior shots of low income housing just a generic looking really fake cityscape.

When I wrote the post, I remembered that I had read somewhere that the exterior photos of Mary's high rise apartment were actually of a low-income housing complex. Since the photos used in the show weren't very detailed, it seemed plausible.

I looked into it further and apparently the building was supposed to be part of a multi-use residential housing community that would house up to 30,000 people. The project stalled and only six of the towers were built.

Some reports say the complex is now 50% subsidized housing and that it has a reputation for crime and drugs.

I should have checked my info first.

As to the garage, it's entirely possible there was an underground garage. I live in SoCal now and those are common in low-rise apartment/condo buildings. I don't know if that was common in Minneapolis. Looking at the Google photos of that complex it looks like there is underground parking. (1600 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN)

I looked at a few screen shots and thought at was just a made up painted cityscape.

If you go on Google Earth (or Google Maps) and use "Street View," you can go a little way west on 21st street and find the entrance to the driveway that goes to the garage out back. If go you one "step" further past the driveway, you can actually see the garage in the distance. It's two stories and there seems to be rooms with with windows atop it.

The house itself is 9,500 sq ft. - - 1800 of those sq ft are below ground. In other words, the basement of this house is larger than the size of the average house built in 1970 when the show began.

The house is currently for sale and can be yours for a mere $1.7 million.

reply

Many houses have garages in the back, not visible from the street.
