black and white episode?

Is the Commonwealth Games episode meant to be black and white?

email appreciated: [email protected]

reply

I seem to recall it being (at least partially? maybe it was a flashback?), but last saw it years ago.

I think I have a color copy of Commonwealth Games - however, I could be wrong. It's been a while since i've seen that episode, so it could've been a B&W.

I have Come Dancing in color, and the rare episode Playgirl Club.

reply

I don't think the black and white goodies episodes were wiped. I think they fell foul of a strike by colour technicians. This strike effected several programs around that time.

Come dancing was thought only to exist in B&W until a year or two ago and has now been released on DVD in the UK. The commonwealth games was shown in Australia and only a B&W copy is known to exist (The BBC would pay a lot for a colour version)
Playgirl's club or Caught in the act only exists in very poor quality B&W (you should see the clips on youtube, terrible quality) its only ever been shown once and I think those clips were copied from the archieve copy that the BBC has. A better quality version would be much appreciated by them (By that I mean money) and by the fans who would love to see it on dvd

reply

Yes, all shows were originally shown in colour but I understand some episodes only exist now in black and white because of the BBC's clumsy policy of wiping and losing old tapes.

reply

also you may like to know the Greenies ya can tell its been colorizes ya can tell by the quality of the Color comparfed to others in that series
we would have go the B& W ones in the 70's the ABC or commecial channels oftern in the 70's got B&W copies of shows that are color in the uk being cheaper then getting the color episodes, eg dr who would been one

reply

Actually, it wasn'r because B&W copies were cheaper, it was because, due to contrast ratios and colour rendition isses, the results were better if the colour-to-monochrome conversion was done on film rather than in the telecine process.

reply

There might be a good chance that these episodes that only remain as black and white copies may get the same restoration treatment that the Dad's Army episode got.

reply

depending If We got the Goodies before 1975 the Fist fews series would been shown in B&W since australia tv didn't go to color til 1975 depending how long it took between debuting in the uk to Abc to pick the show up

reply

Where do you find the "rare" episodes? I have the DVDs of course, and I have searched YouTube. There are still many episodes I have not found. Where should I go next?
