Worst episode?

Every comedy team has an 'off-day' but I can't for the life of me think how the Goodies let that awful 'Come Dancing' episode slip onto the DVD. It's one of the worst things they've ever done.

reply

I didn't mind 'Come Dancing'. If I had to pick a worst episode it would be either 'Apartheight' or 'Beef Eaters'.

But that's not because the episodes are bad, it's because they're my least favourite. I thought the 'Apartheight' wasn't very funny and bordered on uncomfortable much of the time, but I can understand the message it was trying to convey and that it is a reflection of attitudes at the time.

And I didn't like 'Beef Eaters', simply because I didn't understand many of the jokes. I assume that's because it's very "English" humour. I don't mean that racially, in case anyone thinks I do, I just mean it's humour that centers around a knowledge of British history and other aspects of British culture. I still have no idea what "beef eaters" are, other than the very literal meaning.

Other than those two episodes, I absolutely love the Goodies. The content is witty and very funny. Sometimes their jokes are very obvious and contrived, other times their props and "special effects" are downright prehistoric compared to today, but, to me, that's all just part of the humour and awesomeness of the Goodies.

What other episodes/elements do fans like and dislike? I'm very eager to hear input and opinion form others!

Beefeaters are traditional olde-worlde guards whose job is to patrol the tower of London. I agree though, quite a weak episode, but considering it was their first, quite a sterling effort!

I quite like 'Apart-height', there's a lot of funny stuff in there, like Tim blacked-up for the PR film and the whole sequence with the jockeys under Bill's command.

Which episodes would you like to see on the third Network DVD, if there is one? (Here's hoping!) I'd like to see Dodonuts / Almost Live / The Stone Age / 2001 And A Bit / It Might As Well Be String / Goodies Rule OK / Clown Virus / Rome Antics.

reply

Ah, thankee muchly for the tip. The Beef-Eaters episode makes marginally more sense to me now then it did. Unfortunately, I'm still going to have to list it as one of my least favourites.

Here's my selection of the episodes I'd choose for the next DVD:
'It Might As Well Be String'
'Winter Olympics'
'Goodies Rule - OK?'
'Black and White Beauty'
'Dodonuts'
'Politics'
'Double Trouble'
'2001 And A Bit'

Several of them are the same as yours; the Goodies must have done something especially right in those episodes! I haven't seen every episode, though, so I'm hoping there might be a few nice surprises when (not if!) the next DVD is released.

'Black and White Beauty' is one of my absolute favourites but my friend who's also a Goodies fan hates it and thinks I'm loony. I also like the bit in the 'String' episode when Tim relives history and does the baked bean ad... and for some reason I love the line, "I do not want money - do you want a dumpling?"

I think I saw an ad for a new Goodies DVD in a BBC DVD catalogue... if it was, it's to be released this year, though I'm not sure when... I might wander off now and see if I can find out a bit more about it!

A friend of mine used to have 'Goodies Rule OK' on VHS, but when I tried to borrow it from him he told me "I've taped over it". He thought the show was far too long (it runs 48m) and he couldn't take that much of the Goodies in one go!

Other men sail through life, but I've struck a reef.

reply

I think I can safely say that I could take far more than 48mins of Goodies in one go!

Your tale of woe reminds me of one of my own: my uncle used to obsessively tape the Goodies episodes off TV when they aired on the ABC. Just as they started gatting to episodes I hadn't seen already, though, my uncle decided the show wasn't worth the bother and stopped it! I was heartbroken (OK, maybe not quite...) as out here in the sticks we can't get the ABC...

Incidentally, I have done some research on that additional DVD I mentioned and can't find any trace of it anywhere except in that BBC catalogue. All this leads me to the sad conclusion that it's either an already-released DVD with a different cover or a special edition DVD released in England only. Probably the first.

On a happier note, though, I saw the Goodies Boxset in store the other day and was sorely tempted to buy it. I heard it has additional special features on it, though I'm not 100% sure what they are... do you know?

Oh well, there's always the thought of Red Dwarf VII to keep me going...!

My favourite was one that went missing - 'Sex and Violence'. Bill gets involved in the making of violent, Sam Peckinpah-style movies, and finally goes beserk with a camera fitted with a machine gun. It was made shortly after Peckinpah's 'Straw Dogs', and Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange', were filmed in Britain.

It was originally shown on the ABC (Australia) in prime time, but then when repeats of The Goodies were shown around 6PM for years afterward, it mysteriously disappeared!

This episode is not missing. It is on the first dvd colection under its alternative title "Gender Education"

reply

I only mean it was 'missing' from the ABC schedule for all those years.

Sorry for being pedantic, but ''English'' humour would center around Englis history and other aspects of English culture.

Now if you said ''British'' (note that I hate the racist, BNP-inspired, idea of a ''British ethnic group and culture), I would in many ways agree with you.

England and Britain are NOT the same thing and ''British'' encompasses (whether I agree with the use of this term or not) anyone from any country in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, N.Ireland, Cornwall, Man etc.).

I quite liked Come Dancing! I haven't seen many of them (am only 16 but have seen about 12 on DVD), but Apart-Height was the one I laughed at least. I guess it's a kind of contemporary humour that would be better appreciated if you were alive then. After my dad explained some of the jokes to me I got it more but I still don't laugh at that one as much as I do the others. Radio Goodies is probably my favourite. And now, 'A Walk in the Black Forest'...

I agree, Come Dancing was enjoyable. South Africa/Apartheight is still very funny in the first half, I think (racism is still a valid theme) but apartheid is not current. My kids still like the slapstick part, but otherwise I find the later parts slow and not very funny. But of course I focus on the good parts. :-)

"Here's your camera"
"Ah! Black and white?"
"Just... white!"

There are two episodes that I havn't yet seen discussed here: The End and Earthanasia. They are much darker than the others, and less visual. I think they are very good in their own way, but rather different.

After thinking about it a bit, here are my "bottom five":

Caught in the act - Stupid drag adventure. Too much sexist humor.
Goodies and Politics - Not much fun here.
Football Crazy - They had done much of it before, and it wasn't much fun the first time.
Change of life - Not much funin the first half, too much pointers to old material in the second half.
2001 and a bit - A few fun moments, but too much is "a load of rubbish". Poor ending.

You can still find fun gags even in these! In particular, some of the starts off decently but doesn't find enough fun stuff as they go along.

I should mention that the "top" list is much longer. Listing less than 20 top ones seems unfair. 30 is more like it, and then the next 20 are quite enjoyable too.

reply

Actually, I was not totally fair to "Goodies and Politics". The first half is quite good, very funny. The second half, however, after Tim left his Tatcher outfit, is dull, and the ending is pretty much the worst of them all (or I just don't get it). But the whole episode is not bad. The first half makes it worthwhile. Many good gags, and in particular, spoof commercials!

reply

I don't think any of their episodes were bad. some, I admit, weren't as good as the others, but as soon as I've come to some oppinion I watch the show and find it hilarious. Having said this, i do agree with you on Come Dancing. The shows in which they got arrested (I'm not too good with names) and the one with the olympic team, I didn't like either. But they had some great moments just like all the rest.

My favourites are the one with the dinosaur, radio goodies, string, the beanstalk and that one which starts with Bill's birthday. It's hard to pick, though. give me a week and I probably have changed my mind.

reply

Agree that of the two DVD's released 'Come Dancing' is easily the worst of the episodes, despite having same capable guest stars like Joan Sims. They had a few of those episodes in the early years when they were tied down by the format of being an agency.

Overall, the worst episode I saw was 'Daylight Robbery on the Orient Express' - haven't seen it for years but just remember being really bored by it.

I didn't like the Sparkly Pegs one where they go around the world on those bouncy things. I also didn't like the one where all the world's musicians are kidnapped and Bill tries to sing. :P And there was that horrible 'lost tribe' aged cliched episode.

reply

Robot....from the last season...I love the show but I hated that episode

reply

Culture for the Masses from the second season was poor in comparison to the episodes around it. Also, Blue Murder on the Orient Express was pretty self-indulgent and boring.

reply

[deleted]

I hated the "Goodies-Almost Live" episode, which was not a proper episode, but the Goodies performing songs like "Wild Thing".

I didn't know what the point of this whole episode was, and it wasn't even funny.

reply

Not all the episodes are on DVD, but out of the ones that are I would say "punky business". It was too weird for me. Lol

reply

The worst one of all time has to be 'Charity Bounce' for the simple reason that the Goodies aren't even in it for more than a few minutes. It's mostly about the rants and antics of the guest stars interspersed with filmed excerpts of three figures completely covered up in costumes bouncing on hoppers. I have a feeling that Tim, Bill, and Graeme either couldn't or wouldn't be in one episode so they whipped up one where they only had to appear at the beginning and end and then have doubles for the rest of it. What a dud.
