The Advert Parodies

The funniest part of the Goodies in my opinion was the part in the middle where they did send ups of the rather kitschy adverts of the 1970s. This part, though, has dated badly as you have to be familiar with the original advert to appreciate the humour. One of the best, though, had a dig at an advertising figure who's still with us. It was a parody of the Birdseye fish fingers commercial with Graeme Garden as "Captain Fishface". The kids they hired for the parody copied the contrived style of the kids in the real commercial perfectly ("Oh yes, Captain Fishface") At the end of the parody Graeme Garden goes away from the kids and writes a note which he says out loud as he is writing it "Captain Fishface has your children. To get them back, send a thousand box ends from Fishface fish fingers".

I was never very keen on the lad who was in the Heinz baked beans ad either. There was one send up where Tim is dressed as the boy and the ad ends with a trap door opening under him and him falling through it. There was another beans ad send up which I never understood although I might if I saw it again nowadays. The camera pulls away from the set, a plain white wall with "Beanz Meanz Fartz" written on it and reveals an armoured car parked next to the set. Tim says "You pipped it again mate" to the soldier sitting in the turret of the armoured car and the soldier fires the armoured car's gun. At least that's what I remember of it. Tim would also dress up as the boy in the Rice Krispies advert. Angus Deayton revealed on "Before They Were Famous" that this boy was none other than Jonathan Ross (so that means that they were really Wice Kwispies). Tim Brooke-Taylor can now say that he was the most forward thinking comedian of his generation. He was doing Jonathan Ross imitations in the early 1970s!

I like the ads from the police episode - especially the one for the game 'Identi-kit', with the policeman saying "I think you've got thin mean lips" - you've gotta do it in the silly voice though.

I don't want the world, I just want your half.

A predecessor of Wossie's as the Heinz Boy, however, was Tim Brooke-Taylor. It was probably as much his own early career as the contemporary ads that they had in mind.

Are you crazy? The Beanz ad was hilarious! I love it when the director yells "Get it right" and whacks him in the head with a giant mallet. Oh so funny!!

Oh. I totally ***love*** the fish finger commercial with the kids.

I also love the one that sends up rice bubbles - where Tim is told to listen to the sound of the cereal, and it blows up in his face!

And the Lifesavers' ad - which turns out to be a tyre.

I am - SUPERFLUOUS!!!

I loved the 'ROLO SENSATION' parody, where the trio's jerky movements, sitting on a park bench, ends in them choking......

I really loved the adverts. They are a highlight of the series, in my opinion.

Some of my favourites are:
Parody of Wilkinson's Sword: The spoof title is Wilmington's Sword, and it shows a man (played by Tim) actually shaving with a sword, with plasters all around his face.

One where a car is filled with quality petrol and they test it to see how far it would go. The car drives for a while before crashing into a banner blocking the road. The tagline then reads "Robinson's Paper. The strong one."

Parody of Strongbow cider(?): An archer (Tim) marches through the wilderness, before facing a warrior (Bill), who slowly pours and drinks a tankard of cider. Tim draws an arrow to shoot, when a creaking noise is heard. The creaking continues as Tim lowers the bow and then starts to walk, wincing in pain and holding his back. The tagline: "Stone's Linament"

Dog Food parody: Graeme plays a dogowner, with a dog by his side. He says "Henry doesn't always appreciate what I cook for him. Whenever I give him bouillabaisse or chicken kiev, he just turns up his nose at it. And so, I always give him Dogginosh. He may not have very good taste, but he does eat what he likes." A scream is then heard, and chomping. Henry the dog is then seen licking his lips, an apron around his mouth, and the chair toppled.

The dog food commerical i remember, they give the dog a choice of their pet food or a bowl of glass shards, instead of the dog food, it chooses to eat the glass instead! Graeme has to use a broom to push it to the correct bowl.

where Tim is told to listen to the sound of the cereal, and it blows up in his face!

just reading that made me LOL.

i always found those hilarious, but agree it is not so funny if you don't remember the originals. the Captain Fishface one is good. i love the Wilksons Sword one as well. And the one with the man smoking a pipe and the girl running after him.
