I Enjoyed This Film - Two Opposing Reviews

I wasn't able to explain to myself why I enjoyed "Secret World." I looked for reviews or synopses that would help me to understand this haunting, brooding, gorgeous film. After reading the review/synopsis below, I thought "Yes, that's what I mean and how I feel."

This New York Times review, from the period of the film's release, panned "Secret World." I can understand his point of view, but don't buy it.
