Why submitted as Algerian film and not French?

The director is french and the film is french. Just the location is in Algeria.

Reminds me Swiss won in 1990 Journey of Hope. They shouldnt submitted it as a Turkish film because it was about a Turkish family and it was just shooted in Switzerland.

I believe it depends on where the financing comes from. If Algeria financed the movie, it's an Algerian movie.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

The director is Greek.
The story is about a Greek leftist politician that was assasinated by the secret services of the government. This is a true story. The actual name of the politician was Grigoris Lambrakis. And the actual name of the public prosecutor that found out the truth was Christos Sartzetakis.
As you can see when the movie starts, the director says that any similarities with real persons or facts in the film is intentional.
At that time Greece was under dictatorship and no French or other European producer wanted to involve in this. When the movie was released, it was banned in Greece and a few other European countries...
And just for the record: The actual official version of the government was that "a crazy, drunk guy killed him". Do you see any similarities with the JFK murder, John Lennon murder, Martin Luther King murder?

Funny I thought it was set in France, a coastal city so many of which there are. I don't think an assassination like that was possible there, unless in the 18th century or so.

At first I thought it was an Italian production, but settled on French because of the actors. But I now know it was a political statement about Greece. But this could be a story about any country.

sax007 Thanks for your explanation. About your comment about similarities between the murder of JFK and the rest, of course exist. My granddaughter likes Bernie Sanders and at one point I told her that even though she has a lot of hope that the world will be better and more just, there are a lot of people that will not allow it. Everyone believes that democracy exists, but if this is true why are the progressive human beings being murdered? This movie reminded me of Pinochet in Chile, but in reality it reminded me of Guatemala, Vietnam, Nicaragua, etc. The right wing and the religious right will never allow democracy to exist. Give you a simple example, Allende was a marxist elected by the people democratically. It was overthrown. And this keeps on. It's sad, but is true.
