Dutch, a bad shot?

Prior to the final shoot out Dutch fires his gun countless of times yet fails to hit anyone. It is only when Dutch and the others go to their final fate does he kill anyone and that is mainly because of the use of hand grenades. Does Dutch have poor mark's man skills or I am reading too much into it?
