What? No thread about the music?

Well then I'll make the first one!

I love the score for this movie. One of the best ever in my opinion. A great theme. Also on a technical level it's spectacular with counterpoint and fugue like sections.

Anyone else feel the same way?

reply

Yes, I'd like to find a soundtrack CD. There's some glorious music there.

"We're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."

reply

Love the music. Wagnerian.

"Two more swords and I'll be Queen of the Monkey People." Roseanne

Soundtrack CDs for this are very rare - they were only released once on CD with a specialist magazine. I got outbid at the last moment on Ebay for one once!

reply

Although, lo and behold, just a few weeks before I posted the previous reply, I see the whole soundtrack CD is now available on iTunes. I am a happy bunny.

Love it. This movie has been in my collection since it was first available on VHS and I have enjoyed uncounted viewings. Of special note is the opening credits. Not only is the overture great, but the sound effects and POV visual of the plane's flight path are also terrific. (My favorite is when the pilot leans on the throttle to climb through the high notch between mountain peaks.) An excellent score throughout, and used in the right places, rather than with the annoying constancy of some film music.

Frankly, yeah - the music is great in the movie but I can't see wanting to listen to it except when watching the movie. Which is still a classic by any measure. It has that "Usual Suspects" quality of *beep* when you figure it all out. This movie works on so many levels...

One of my favorite soundtracks ever. Get it at Screen Archives Entertainment like I did. I am listening to it right now!

One of my favorite scores ever. It's got that deep, huge, majestic feeling I also get from seeing things like Empires Strikes Back.

I've always loved the title theme - with the drums, and then the ominous chords and so forth. I had the soundtrack album as a two-fer with Operation Crossbow on the second disc, which I listened to once.

The problem with the soundtrack album is that it's basically the title theme, variations on same, and the "suspense music" repeated several times. The score is actually quite limited. It works brilliantly in the course of the film though.

I wouldn't say it was limited, it was quite cleverly done. The main theme really is the "main" theme, and the rest of the "suspense music" is the main theme dissected into parts. It all fits together, and it's all part of a whole. You need to be really good making variations of the same harmonies without feeling bored, it's actually very well done.

There are certain passages when the music sounds very much like the music from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Especially where they are climbing out the window to escape from the castle.

A coincidence?

I agree, perfect music!

reply

I found the Main Theme too noisy and bombastic for the opening credits. However, it was used successfully toward the end of the film.

reply

Yes! Thank you. It's about time the music got some of the love around here. It's never left me since I first heard it oh so many years ago.
